Traditional paper fiat and gold currencies lack the capability to be programmed and have limited functionality. They cannot be upgraded, while programmable money like cryptocurrencies, have the added advantage of being able to incorporate logic through smart contracts. This allows for value exchange with specific conditions and rules encoded in the contract. This ability to build on top of existing technology, creating new functions and possibilities, is similar to the concept of compound interest in finance and is referred to as "composability."
